Ring the bells for Amy and Sheldon on “The Big Bang Theory.” And Michael C. Hall stars in “Safe.”
What’s on TV
THE BIG BANG THEORY 8 p.m. on CBS. The relationship between Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) has developed slowly, in awkward fits and tender starts, during this sitcom’s 11-year run: They broke up over and over before finally consummating their relationship after five years of dating. In the Season 11 finale, the pair will tie the knot. Guest stars include Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon’s mom; Kathy Bates and the magician Teller as Amy’s parents; and Mark Hamill — playing himself.
THE BLUE ANGEL (1930) 8 p.m. on TCM. Marlene Dietrich was a little-known German actress when she was cast as the title figure of this tragicomedy directed by Josef von Sternberg. But her alluring turn as a cabaret singer in this movie would catapult her to international fame and a contract with Paramount. Emil Jannings, who had won the first Oscar a year earlier, co-stars as a middle-aged professor who falls in love with her and descends into madness. While Mr. von Sternberg claimed the film was not a political allegory, in 1933 it was banned in Nazi Germany.
What’s Streaming
SAFE on Netflix. Michael C. Hall seems to often take on roles surrounded by death — whether as an embalmer (“Six Feet Under”), a serial killer (“Dexter”) or an avatar for David Bowie’s swan song (“Lazarus”). Now he plays a grief-stricken widower in this new British series, which was conceived by Harlan Coben. As he tries to raise his two daughters and keep them safe in a gated community, a teenage girl disappears — and he finds that his neighborhood is hiding plenty of dark secrets.
MOTHERLAND on Sundance Now. Sharon Horgan is on quite a run. Over the past decade she’s shepherded two beloved and acclaimed sitcoms, “Pulling” and “Catastrophe,” and signed a deal with Amazon Studios. Her latest project is “Motherland,” which wrings comedy out of the sometimes torturous life of a mom. Anna Maxwell Martin stars as Julia, whose overwhelming schedule causes her to rely on a group of other mothers — known as the alpha mums — for help. The series is filled with culture clashes and awkward interactions.
MANHUNT on Netflix. How many explosions can John Woo fit into one action sequence? And how many action sequences can he fit into one movie? This film director from Hong Kong (“The Killer,” “Face/Off”) tries to find out with yet another highly combustible action flick. The film, a remake of the 1976 Japanese film of the same name, follows a Chinese lawyer who is framed for murder. As he tries to flee the police, he sets off a wild series of events that include a Jet Ski chase, an elaborate dance-floor sequence, a global conspiracy, shattering glass panes and plenty of slow motion. You might not follow the plot, but it probably won’t matter.
